AN OVERVIEW OF WEST HOLLYWOOD

A brief history

The city’s irregular shape reflects its origins as an assortment of previously unincorporated communities in LA County. West Hollywood did not incorporate until 1984 – a detail that played into its role as a haven for casinos and nightclubs in the 1920s, particularly along Sunset Boulevard.

At the time, casinos were prohibited in the city of Los Angeles but allowed in the rest of LA County. The unincorporated areas that would later make up the city of West Hollywood became a convenient and legal venue for gaming just outside the LA city limits.

In the late 1960s, the Sunset Strip became a center for hippie culture, which gave rise to the establishment of a music publishing industry. West Hollywood’s incorporation in 1984 was the result of a movement to protect the renter-heavy population from rising rental prices. Upon incorporation, the new city adopted some of the strongest rent control laws in the United States.

Location

West Hollywood is bordered by Beverly Hills to the west and the LA neighborhoods of Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, the Fairfax District, and Beverly Grove to the east, north, southeast, and southwest respectively.

With its central location and wealth of attractions, the city is a popular destination and highly convenient base for tourists, business travelers, and numerous professionals who live and work in the metro. This has made homes for sale in West Hollywood some of the most sought after properties in Los Angeles.
