Silver Lake earns its reputation as the hipster capital of Los Angeles. LA’s thriving indie music scene sprung up here in the 1990s, in clubs and cafes along this stretch of Sunset Boulevard just east of Hollywood and Los Feliz. Silver Lake remains a hotbed of trendy, artsy, and countercultural nightlife and coffee shop culture.
The Silver Lake neighborhood takes its name from the large reservoir in the middle of the neighborhood. The jogging trail around the reservoir is a popular place for the locals to stay fit.
The lake also defines a low elevation in the region that gave rise to some of Silver Lake’s most distinctive architectural features—the many stone staircases that provide pedestrian access to the different elevations of this hilly neighborhood. Many “secret” staircases are painted bright colors, adding to the artsy and bohemian vibe that Silver Lake already had in spades. Exploring the neighborhood by staircase is one of the great pleasures of an afternoon or balmy evening in the life out here.
Staircases and elevation mean hills, which means views. Come to Silver Lake for the hipster culture; stay for the dazzling hillside views overlooking the lake and central Los Angeles. Perched into the hills like an Italian village, the Bungalow, Contemporary, Craftsman, Mediterranean, and Spanish style homes offer both beauty and affordability.
The thriving nightlife scene includes clubs where up-and-coming acts intersperse nights with major recording stars, who choose Silver Lake clubs for some of their more intimate shows. Other attractions include the “Chandelier Tree,” a 100-year-old sycamore festooned with old chandeliers from movie sets, lit up every night for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
