Once dubbed “America’s Champs-Élysées,” Miracle Mile is a one-mile stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between Highland and Fairfax that has been a lightning rod of commercial success stories since its inception in the 1930s.
Developed by visionary A.W. Ross, it was one of the first commercial centers to cater to car traffic rather than foot traffic. Ross actually invented the dedicated left turn and timed traffic lights to serve the car traffic of Miracle Mile. It has served as an inspiration for commercial districts ever since, but the Art Deco splendor of Miracle Mile still stands in a class by itself.
Today the site of a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone, Miracle Mile includes many attractions, including Museum Row, the site of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the George C. Page Museum, the Peterson Automotive Museum, and the Craft Contemporary Museum.
Miracle Mile is also home to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who hand out the prestigious Academy Awards, aka the Oscars, every year to the year’s best film work. But its roots as a landmark are also prehistoric—Miracle Mile is home to Hancock Park La Brea, home of the infamous La Brea Tarpits.
Then, as now, Miracle Mile remains a hotbed of retail, culinary, and nightlife activity. Designed to be car-friendly, it is also one of the most commuter-friendly neighborhoods in Los Angeles, well served by buses and commuter rails.
To be walking distance from this commercial hotspot, you could select one of the many classy single-family homes built into the geometric blocks adjacent to Miracle Mile. Homes for sale in Miracle Mile can date back to the 40s, sitting alongside more recent constructions in Ranch, Contemporary, and Mid-Century Modern architectural styles. Reasonably priced for LA south of $700 per square foot, homes here have median list prices north of $1.5 million.
